***Must be returned by October Swine Meeting to be an active member and take a pig to the fair this year.
Swine Group Guidelines
Meetings:
- The Swine groups meetings will begin in September and go through
July. No meeting in December.
- The meetings will be held the 2nd Tuesday of the month
at 7pm at the Paso Robles Grange Hall.
- Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each meeting. You must
participate in the breakout groups at the end of the meetings to be
counted for attendance.
- Members must be enrolled and have guidelines turned in by the
October swine meeting. Members that enroll after October's swine meeting
will not exhibit an animal at the fair this year.
- Members must print a PDR and Market livestock report and bring it
to ALL swine meetings with a writing utensil to document what you have
accomplished that month.
- No cell phone usage at the meeting. If a leader or junior/ teen
leader sees your phone, it will be held by the leader for the duration of
the meeting and you will be required to put away the chairs after the
meeting.
- Group members are required to attend at least 80% of project
meeting in addition to 80% of the club’s general meetings.
- Swine members not attending at least 80% of both meetings will not
be allowed to take their project to the fair.
- All swine members will keep an accurate record of all 4-H activities
including a record of their animal(s). Record Books will be
completed and turned in at our July Swine meeting. You will have 7 days
from that meeting to make any corrections to your record book and turn them
back in completed or you will not be allowed to show at the fair due to
the fact that you are not a member in good standing with the Club.
Record books need to be complete to the standards set by the county
for judging, whether you want to be judged or not.
- All members are required to give one demonstration at a swine
project meeting on a topic that will be drawn at the first meeting. This
demonstration is to be done at the assigned meeting. One demonstration will
also be required at a general meeting. Any additional demonstrations can be about
any topic and are optional. The demonstration must be accompanied with
information in writing or a poster board display / multi-media presentation.
The required demonstrations must be completed at regular scheduled meetings
prior to June 30 to be able to exhibit at the fair.
- All members are required to participate in a minimum of two
Community Service Projects. The Club’s Adopt -A- Street is a required community
service while the other can be any offered by our group as a community service.
This must fulfill before June 30 or you will not exhibit your animal at fair.
- Animals must be cared for and feed properly. One warning will be
given and if a correction is not made immediately, you will not show at the
fair.
- This form must be returned signed by parent(s) and member by the
October swine meeting or the member will be not be considered enrolled in the
project for the year.
- All members are required to attend at least 2 (two) showmanship
practice during May or June.
If ALL of the above is not completed, you may not exhibit an animal at the fair.
Project Cost

- This is an estimate of cost there are lots of factors to consider.

Group Participation:
- As the name implies, Chaparral 4-H Swine is a “group” or “team”
effort.
- The members will set goals and directions, with the assistance of
the Teen Leaders, Junior Leaders and Project Leaders.
- The Swine group spends approximately $100.00 per animal per year
to purchase, repair and maintain the basic equipment required to compete at the
Mid-State Fair and cover costs of shavings, displays and other expenses
while at the fair.
- Since this benefits all the members of the group, it is only fair
that everyone participates in any given fundraiser.
- As a result, each member must be responsible for doing one of
these three things.
B. Pay the difference between the amount raised and the minimum of $140.
C. Pay the entire $140.
- A budget for the year detailing the minimum anticipates expenses at
the fair will be submitted to the membership for a vote at the September
Swine group meeting.
- Every member has a say about all swine group functions including
all activities, fundraisers,
Parent Participation:
- Part of the goals of 4-H is to promote interaction between the
parent, child and family.
- Ideally the project should become a family project with the 4-H
member taking care of the animal’s day to day needs with the support of his or
her parents.
- Parents who “take over” the project for the 4-H member are doing
him or her a disservice.
- Parents who do not get involved with 4-H members and their projects
are doing themselves and their child a disservice.
- Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend all group meetings.
- Parent help during the year for weighing, fundraising, showmanship
practices, etc. is greatly
- Parent help is also needed for various activities during the fair,
if their schedule permits. Parents need to supervise their child’s barn duties
and their activities while at the fair. We are not babysitters. Leaders
are here for guidance.
- It is not the project leaders or any other member’s role to take
on any duties associated with the day to day needs of a member’s animal.
This would include feeding, weighing and or veterinary duties.
- Leaders will assist the member in putting together a feeding plan.
The leaders will, within their abilities, diagnose and help treat stressed or
ill animals. However, it will be the responsibilities of the animal’s owner to
follow up with day to day needs or treatment and/or contact a veterinarian if
needed.
Conduct:
- Members are expected to follow the 4-H Code of Conduct.
- Parents are expected to be respectful and understand that there
are children around them at all 4-H events. Poor conduct will not be tolerated
and you will be asked to not attend 4-H events.
- Be mindful that you represent Chaparral 4-H and we would like to maintain
a good name.
- Each member is required to be available the entire week of the
fair. If you are working during the fair you must provide us your schedule
prior to the start of the fair.
- While at the fair you are an Exhibitor, with your swine animal
being the Exhibit. Many people come to the barns to see the animals during the
course of the fair. For many, this is the only time they see 4-H members and
their animals. The impression you leave will be a long lasting one, so let’s
make it a positive one. Your animal’s stalls and area around it must be neat
and clean at all times. We need to be courteous and respectful of other people
at all times.( Remember your buyers may be there to look at your animal.
Unruly behavior or horseplay will not be tolerated.)
- Cleaning of the pens begins at 6am. All dirty shaving shall be
removed and replaced with new shavings. Pen cleaning must be complete by 7am.
Feeding times are 7am and 5pm. In addition to feeding times, all members will
be assigned barn duty. Duty times will be scheduled by the project leader. All
members must be at the barns at these times to care for all the club’s animals.
Failure to be at the barns at the above mentioned times may result additional
barn duty being assigned. Messing around and not caring for all the
animals on barn duty will result in an additional barn duty.
- You must groom and fit your own animal without parent and / or
leader help. Pigs should be bathed in the afternoon prior to show days. Members
may not wear flip- flops or open toed at any time in the barns. Heavy shoes or
rubber boots are required when working with your animal.
- The official 4-H uniform must be worn for market judging,
showmanship, auction, auction runner, refreshment server, or other activities
representing 4-H.
- At market judging, showmanship and auction days, a team effort
will be utilized. Group members or leaders will be expected to help each other
to and from the ring. No member is to leave the barn before all other members
have finished the scheduled activities for the day, cleaned everything up and
are excused by the leader.
- When you sell your animal you must give the buyer, at a minimum, a
very nice “Thank You Card”. It is preferred for you to give a gift or donation
to Heritage Foundation along with it.
- Sales checks from the auction will be distributed after the fair
at the “End of Fair” party. Group members must have completed all buyers’ thank
you letters and settled all debts to the club prior to attending the fair.
9. You will be expected to write a grade appropriate thank you letter for your buyer(s) at the check party and include a picture. If the buyer has requested no pictures then the picture will go to any add-ons you have received.
**Any rules not followed will result in not exhibiting at the fair and/or not being a member in good standing which will result in not being allowed in the swine project the following year.
Note: This is a rough guide only; more information will be given out at all meetings. If there are any questions please call one of the leaders anytime. We are here to help.
